Vocablet of the Day: Susceptible

Today’s Vocablet highlights an unseen biological change that works to make men better dads.

The susceptible (New Dads) Vocablet demonstrates that it’s not just moms who undergo a huge hormonal shift after the birth of a new baby.  Because newborns are so frail and feeble, new dads experience a drop in testosterone levels, making them less aggressive and more nurturing to their needy infants.

Scientific American, in response to the wide media attention this story has received, has posted an in-depth explanation of the study and its findings, as well as its implications for interpretations of human, and especially male, behavior in society.  It’s not just becoming a father, but taking an active role in childcare, that lowers testosterone in new dads.
